Navigating the labyrinth of life, sometimes we just can’t put our finger on the last time we felt truly, deeply happy. You know, that kind of happiness that makes your heart sing and your soul dance?
It’s like you’re stuck in this perpetual fog of ‘meh’, trying to remember what it feels like to be genuinely content and at peace with everything.
You’ve read self-help books. You’ve tried to meditate. You’ve even journaled your thoughts at 3 am in the desperate hope of finding some answers. But it feels like you’re just treading water, doesn’t it?
Well, here’s the thing. Sometimes, we need to turn inward and confront the questions we’ve been avoiding.
It’s not about finding blame or dwelling on the past. It’s about understanding ourselves better so we can carve a path to happiness that’s genuinely ours.
Coming up are eight reflective questions that could potentially be your roadmap to rediscovering joy. They might stir up some emotions, they might make you rethink your perspective, but trust me, they’re worth it.
This is your journey into the art of self-reflection. And trust me, it’s a journey worth taking if you’re tired of not remembering the last time you felt truly happy.
1) What does happiness mean to you?
This is where we start, by defining what happiness means to you.
Not the textbook definition or what society tells you it should be. This is about your personal, heartfelt understanding of what it means to be happy.
Is it about achieving success in your career? Is it about building meaningful relationships? Or is it about finding inner peace and contentment?
There are no right or wrong answers here. It’s all about discovering your unique perspective on happiness.
Once you’ve got a clear picture of what happiness means to you, it will be easier to identify why you might be missing it in your life right now.
Remember, self-reflection is not a race. Take your time with this question. Let your thoughts flow naturally. It’s the first step on your journey towards rediscovering joy and contentment.
2) When was the last time you felt that kind of happiness?
After defining what happiness means to you, it’s time to delve into your memory bank.
Think about the last time you felt that kind of happiness, the one that aligns with your personal definition.

For me, I recall a moment when I was sitting on a beach in Bali. The sun was setting, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. I felt the sand between my toes, heard the waves crashing, and smelled the salty sea air.
In that moment, I felt a deep sense of peace and contentment. It wasn’t about having a successful career or being in a relationship. It was about being present and appreciating the beauty around me.
That was my personal definition of happiness coming to life.
Your moment might be different. Maybe it was when you landed your dream job or when your child took their first step.
Whatever it is, hold onto that memory. It is a crucial piece of your happiness puzzle.
3) Are you living in accordance with your values?
A wise man named Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”
It’s an insightful quote, isn’t it? It made me pause and think about the role of values in our pursuit of happiness.
You see, often we chase after success thinking it will bring us happiness, only to find that it’s not enough. Why? Because success without values feels empty.
I discovered this the hard way. I had a high-paying job, a luxury apartment, and a fast car – everything that society defines as ‘success’. But I wasn’t happy. I felt like something was missing.
Then I realized that my life wasn’t aligned with my values. I valued simplicity, authenticity, and kindness. But my lifestyle was anything but simple or authentic.
That’s when I understood that true happiness comes from living in accordance with our values.
Are you living in accordance with your values? If not, what changes can you make to align your life with what truly matters to you?
Happiness is not just about achieving goals. It’s about living a life that resonates with your deepest values and beliefs.
4) Are you comparing yourself to others?
Here’s something you might not know: Studies have shown that the habitual comparison of oneself to others is a significant contributor to unhappiness.

Let’s be honest, it’s easy to fall into the comparison trap, especially in this age of social media where everyone else’s life seems picture-perfect.
But the truth is, everyone has their own journey with its unique ups and downs. What you see on the outside doesn’t always reflect what’s going on inside.
For instance, someone who seems successful and happy on the surface could be struggling with personal issues behind the scenes.
It took me a while to understand this. I used to constantly compare myself to others and felt miserable whenever I thought someone else was doing better than me.
But over time, I realized that this was only adding to my unhappiness.
So, I started focusing on my own journey instead of measuring my worth against others. And you know what? It made a huge difference in my level of happiness.
Are you comparing yourself to others? Is it bringing you down? If yes, it might be time to shift your focus onto your own journey instead.
5) Are you embracing change or resisting it?
Change is a constant in life. It’s inevitable and often beyond our control. Yet, how we react to change can greatly impact our happiness.
Think about it. When we resist change, we create emotional turmoil. We cling to what was, causing stress and discontent. On the other hand, when we embrace change, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and growth.
For example, I remember when I lost my job due to company-wide layoffs. Initially, I resisted the change. I was upset, anxious, and couldn’t stop thinking about how unfair it all was.
But after a while, I decided to embrace the change. I saw it as an opportunity to explore new career paths and reevaluate my goals.
And you know what? That shift in mindset led me to a job that I love even more than my previous one.
Are you embracing change or resisting it? Your answer might just reveal a crucial piece of your happiness puzzle.
6) Are you taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally?
Here’s a simple, yet profound truth – our physical, mental, and emotional well-being plays a vital role in our happiness.

Often, when we’re feeling unhappy or off-balance, it’s our body’s way of telling us that something is not right. Maybe we’re not getting enough sleep, or we’re neglecting our mental health, or we’re suppressing our emotions instead of dealing with them.
For instance, I used to burn the candle at both ends, putting work before my health. I was constantly stressed and hardly ever slept well. I thought I was being productive, but in reality, I was doing more harm than good.
It wasn’t until I started taking care of myself – physically by eating healthier and exercising regularly, mentally by practicing mindfulness and giving myself breaks, and emotionally by expressing my feelings instead of bottling them up – that I began to feel happier.
So take a moment to evaluate how you’re treating yourself. Are you taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally?
If not, it might be time to start prioritizing self-care in your pursuit of happiness.
7) Are you living in the present or dwelling on the past and future?
One thing that often robs us of our happiness is our inability to stay present. Instead, we’re either dwelling on the past or anxious about the future.
I’m guilty of this too. There was a time when I was so consumed with past regrets and future worries that I barely noticed the life happening around me.
Then, I stumbled upon mindfulness, a practice that emphasizes being fully engaged in the present moment. It was a game-changer for me.
I started meditating, focusing on my breath, and consciously bringing my attention back to the present whenever I found myself drifting into the past or future.
The result? A significant improvement in my overall happiness. I began to appreciate the beauty around me, savour every bite of my food, and truly enjoy my interactions with others.
Are you living in the present or are you letting your past and future steal your happiness? Remember, life is happening right now. Don’t miss it by being somewhere else in your mind.
8) Do you practice gratitude?
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, consider whether you regularly practice gratitude.
Gratitude is a powerful tool that can shift our focus from what’s missing in our lives to the abundance that’s already present.
I can vouch for this from personal experience. I used to focus on the problems and challenges in my life, which led me to feel discontent and unhappy.

But when I started keeping a gratitude journal, writing down three things I was grateful for each day, my perspective started to change.
Instead of focusing on what was going wrong, I began appreciating what was going right. Even on tough days, I could find something to be grateful for – a hot cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, a beautiful sunset.
And you know what? My overall happiness improved significantly.
Are you practicing gratitude in your everyday life? If not, give it a try. You might be surprised at the positive impact it can have on your happiness.
Embracing your journey
No doubt, reconnecting with your happiness is a journey of self-discovery and reflection. It’s about asking the tough questions, understanding your values, embracing change, and nurturing self-care.
But remember, happiness is not a destination. It’s a daily practice. It’s about finding joy in the little moments, expressing gratitude, and staying present.
As Confucius wisely said, “We have two lives, and the second begins when we realize we only have one.”
So start living your second life today. Start asking these questions and slowly peel back the layers of your happiness puzzle.
It won’t be easy. It will require courage to face these questions and honesty to answer them. But trust me, the journey is worth it.
Because at the end of this path, you’ll find not just happiness but also a deeper understanding of yourself. And isn’t that the most beautiful journey of all?
Here’s to you and your journey to rediscovering happiness. Remember, the path is yours to walk and the happiness is yours to find.
And if you ever need a helping hand or a listening ear on this journey, we’re here for you. We’re all walking this path together, one reflective question at a time.
